Morinaga – Omochi-Chi Matcha Chewy Candy
Mochi and matcha – two of my favourite things. One for the chewy, bouncy texture and the other for the rich earthy, bitter flavour. Apparently I’m not the only one because Morinaga decided to make a mochi like candy that has a matcha flavour to it. I trust Morinaga to do chewy textures well – I mean after all they were the ones who created Hi-Chew. All the would really have to do is port over some of that Hi-Chew premium texture and add in a nice matcha flavour to it. That alone would be a hit out of the park. Let’s see if that’s the case here.
I’m a sucker for cute and creative packaging, and this no exception. It’s a bit odd to anthropomorphize mochi but it does make them all the more adorable and intriguing. Not sure why it makes me want to eat them more either. Kind of a weird feeling.
These have what I would best describe as a mochi like quality, very similar to the Hi-Chew premium balls that come in a pouch, without the outer candy shell. These are very chewy and stretchy, and somehow manage to not stick to anything, probably because of the outer coating of starch (at least I think it’s starch). They’re honestly soft and non-sticky enough that you can play around with them like edible play doh. If you stretch a piece out, you’ll see it very quickly trying to retract back to it’s original shape, which gives you a good idea of just how chewy these are. If you like Hi-Chews, you would love these. They are more mochi than taffy in texture, but if you’re into that these would be just what you need.
The flavour is fairly strong matcha which I love, and really does remind me of a quality matcha flavoured mochi. Matcha is one of those things that if you like it, you want more of the flavours that not everyone enjoys. The bitter, earthy and almost nutty flavour is definitely something that’s not for everyone. But if you enjoy that (as I do) then you’ll likely enjoy this candy quite a bit.
I really enjoyed these quite a bit, and I’m sad these don’t seem to be that easy to find or source. If they were, I’d be making these a main staple of my rotating roster. Not to mention these are kind of fun to play with and stretch around. Just be sure to wash your hands before and after…
