Plant Snacks – Cheddar Plant Thins

Ever the sucker for a novelty, I figured why not try these out. The main gimmick here is that they are not only vegan, but they are made using various plant based proteins. The cheese flavour is interesting too since these are marketed as dairy free and vegan. All that to say, this ain’t actual cheese, bruh.

The website says that these particular thins are made from a mix of corn, mushroom, peas, and cassava powder. I couldn’t tell you how they came up with that, but I’m all for trying something out of the ordinary. As always, I’m more concerned about whether it tastes good, than if it’s good for you or healthy and all that jazz. Tastes reigns king. If you don’t find yourself enjoying a snack, you might as well not eat it, right?

They have a rectangular, almost square like shape. For something that doesn’t have actual cheese in it, these things smell quite pungent and cheesy. Thankfully the flavour makes up for it – it has a distinct cheesiness to it that surprised me a bit, and reminds me a bit of some of the dairy free cheese flavours I’ve had in the past. It has a cheddar flavour that’s very close to the real thing, but has a slight sweetness to it, which kind of reminds me onion. If you didn’t tell me these were vegan, I would have no idea and just think it was a different cheese blend of some sort.

Like staring down a well. But with potentially tasty treats at the bottom.

The texture of these are like a cross between a really thin cracker and a tortilla chip. They are small and thin, but have a surprisingly decent crunch to them. They are basically a baked tortilla chip that’s been pressed thin. It’s not too thick or crunchy, but has just enough to make it feel substantial beyond it’s appearance. Something about all the other plants they use in the base flour that give it that extra crunch. Something I can definitely get behind.

Like a cross between cracker and chip in the best way.

I honestly enjoyed these way more than I was expecting. I was hoping to try some novelty healthy-ish snack and ended up finding something I would definitely get again. A big part of that is how crunchy these are. If you don’t like crunchy snacks, this may not be for you. But if you love a good crunch, well boy do I have a recommendation for you. These surprised me at how good they are, and I would definitely go for more.

They aren’t much better than typical chips in the calorie department though.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
