Rogers’ Chocolate – Champagne Truffles

Call me uncultured swine or uncouth, but I honestly couldn’t give a good, useful description of what champagne tastes like. I’ve had it before a few times, but apart from the bubbly quality of it, I don’t know how else to describe it. I know that it’s made from grapes, but that’s about as far as my expertise goes. You can tell I don’t drink much. I prefer to partake in other activities to indulge myself. Ahem.

But you put that fancy booze into a chocolate and suddenly you have my attention. I have had my share of boozy chocolates, whether it be a syrup or part of the chocolate itself, but I have yet to try a boozy truffle. At least not that I remember…

These have a very quaint, handmade feel to them. The chocolate shell reminds me of those creams or cherry cordials where they have to put them through an enrobing machine and has that little trails on the top. That just the feel though, and given how big this brand has gotten, I doubt it’s actually handmade. It still has a nice old fashioned feel to it though.

The chocolate shell is very rich, bittersweet chocolate. The truffle center while a bit on the smaller side, has a very decadent and rich champagne flavour. It does a really good job of hitting those typical alcohol filled chocolate flavours where you get the distinct alcohol taste without the burn, and a distinct notes of grape with mostly sweet, cloying flavour. It works well against the dark chocolate to balance things out and give it a sophisticated flavour.

The texture of the outer chocolate is that of something in the 55 to 60 range of dark chocolate where it’s borderline brittle, but still has a bit of a melt to it. It’s firm and has a nice snap to it when you bite in, and the truffle center is very soft, very smooth and has an interesting contrast to the harder dark shell. It sort of reminds me of cherry cordials or cream chocolates.

My only complaint is that the truffle center is a tad on the smaller side, and I would have liked a higher ratio of truffle to chocolate shell, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed these and would get them again. These occupy an interesting segment where it’s fancy enough to be given as a gift, but not fancy enough that I wouldn’t consider buying them for myself every once in a while.
