Toppo – Caramel Butter
Admittedly the pace of which I consume Toppo these days has fallen off a steep cliff. A lot of that has to do with the novelty of it wearing off, as they don’t release very many new flavours, unlike brands like Hi-Chew or Pocky that crank something new out every week it seems. The consequence of this is that I end up trying more flavours that I would normally find too boring or basic.
While I can’t say I’ve had the exact sandwich cookie in the reference picture, I have had something similar where its overall very buttery, and has a sweet, sticky caramel in the center. Very decadent. Or so I would imagine. Having said that, the combination of caramel and butter is not exactly revolutionary, so I am not expecting this to be substantially better or worse than other similar Toppo flavours I’ve had before.

The flavour is very dairy forward, by which I mean there’s no doubt this tastes very buttery with notes of vanilla and caramel. It somewhat reminds me of having those butter cream sandwiches, but what it reminds me most of is a nice vanilla ice cream with a streak of caramel. It’s a pretty simple and straightforward flavour, and if nothing else makes for a nice simple snack. It gives me a bit of nostalgia to when I was a kid and had vanilla flavoured cookies which reminded me of what a basic or plain flavoured cookie would be like.

The texture is classic Toppo form – these are like a solid biscuit with a slightly flaky outer shell. It doesn’t leave any mess or crumbs though, and also breaks clean. While these aren’t as crisp as Pocky, they make up for it in mouth feel. It feels more like eating a cookie stick with a nice filling, and it is quite solid as well, and isn’t runny or melty. It’s a convenient to eat snack that doesn’t sacrifice the texture, which I love.

Maybe I’ve just had too many different Toppo flavours at this point, but this one while tasty, doesn’t particularly stand out to me over the other flavours. Again, that could just be due to me having had so many different flavours and varieties that they all start to taste very similar. I wouldn’t mind getting this again, but if there was another flavour I would probably get that first. Unless it’s a coffee based flavour…
