Black Thunder – Salty Milk

Enough time has passed that adding salt to chocolate or caramel is not considered strange at all. Nay, in the current time and age, it’s nearly expected because the combination works so well together. It should make sense then, that someone would create a flavour combination out of salt and milk. I’m sure what they mean is there’s salt and milk or dairy content in this, but the tag line of salty milk turns more heads, wouldn’t you say? When I think of salty milk, I imagine something a high school kid would have conjured up on a field trip or to a buffet where they have limitless fountain drinks. The horror.

A selling point of this is that the milk is sourced from France…or is it the salt? One or both of these components is from France. Why else would they have the silhouette of the French flag here? I really need to learn Japanese…

The format here is that of the mini bites, rather than the bar. That makes these easier to portion control and heaven’s forbid, share. The pouch houses 8 bites, which let’s be real could be finished in about five minutes if you wanted.

The inside is the typical Black Thunder affair, with cocoa bits, biscuits and what I imagine would be salt. Biting into one of those squares, the only difference I notice is that the bite is tougher than the bar, and it seems to be partially due to a thicker coat of the chocolate. The biscuits seem to be bigger pieces than the usually small ones, but for the most part it has that nice cookie crunch that Black Thunder is known for.

Something about the shape is very pleasing to look at.

The flavour is got a nice creamy milk chocolate quality to it, but the salt is quite noticeable quite immediately, and the salt is in the driver seat for the most part, but with a light foot. It’s not too aggressive as a driver, but it’s going at a steady pace so that you know it’s there. Something to note is that the salt and the milk together give it an almost savoury biscuit profile to it, reminding me almost of the biscuit of a Pretz or Pocky.

The chocolate bares all.

This is a bit out there for some I’m sure, but it’s one of the examples of where adding salt to a sweet treat works out quite well. I don’t consider myself a salty person (on most days), but I could definitely see myself getting these again. Hell, I might even do this on the regular if it was more readily available in my area.

That’s a lot of calories…

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
