Frisk Neo – Pineapple Soda Mint
I didn’t realize until I took a closer look, but this isn’t JUST pineapple. It’s pineapple soda. I guess it makes sense now why the top is yellow and the bottom is blue. This may be one of those situations where it may have factored into my decision, had I known about it. I love pineapple as a flavour, but soda in general is very hit or miss for me, and as I get older they miss more often than hit.
I’ve had Frisk a few times now and I do happen to enjoy it. While I prefer the softer format like Mintia, these have their place in the mint space. I especially appreciate the metal tin packaging, which can always be reused for other mints, or other small things like jelly beans. The downside is that they are quite noisy.
The smell of these is overwhelmingly pineapple, and I’m all for it. The pineapple flavour is strong with this, and the only reason you would think it’s not just pineapple is when the bottom blue layer hits. It’s reminiscent of the common ramune flavour that Japan loves to use. I would love to get just the pineapple, as I’m not crazy about the soda flavour. Having said that, it also doesn’t detract that much from it, so these are still quite nice. The soda layer adds a little bit of tart citrus flavour. Of course, being a mint, there’s also a bit of a chilling sensation that is on the afterburner as it dissolves. Most of the experience is going to come from the flavour as it melts and dissolves, but it does leave you with a pleasant minty feeling when it’s all said and down. The pineapple flavour is strong but not the kind to leave a linger aftertaste for long, so that’s also a plus.
The texture is like those compressed dextrose candies, where it’s very hard to bite into but it’s meant to slowly dissolve in the mouth and release flavour. You could of course try to bite into it, but there’s really no benefit to that as all you really end up doing is speeding up the dissolving process, and there’s not reason to do that. As far as classic styled mints go, these are the low maintenance easy type you just tuck away in your cheek or under your tongue and let it do it’s thing in the background.
