La Cocina Foods – Siesta Tortilla Chips

I’m not sure if I just haven’t been paying attention, or this is more of a local thing but La Cocina is a brand that started in Manitoba, but I didn’t find out about them until very recently. As someone who enjoys their fair share of tortilla chips, I tend to like trying newer, less popular brands because I like being surprised and seeing different takes on the formula. Plus, you never know when you’ll chance upon a brand or flavour you fall in love with and find another snack to fuel your snack binge.

I didn’t actually find this in any of my local grocery stores, but rather an online retailer within the Frigid North, but outside of my slice of the country. Truth be told the packaging on these chips aren’t particularly flashy or eye catching, and reminded me more of some really old fashioned style chips where they don’t fuss much about the packaging. That’s part of the charm though. What really drew me in though, beyond being a brand I never tried, is the flavour. What on earth is siesta flavour? Isn’t siesta supposed to be an afternoon nap? Am I going to pass out if I eat these in the afternoon? These questions and many more meant I couldn’t pass these up.

They look and smell quite mild.

The most noticeable thing here is about the texture of the chips themselves. They are very thin, and as a consequence very light. So thin in fact, that a lot of them have a tendency to curl up at the edges. The problem with these is that because each chip is so thin, it’s very easy to find yourself finishing half a bag before you feel like you’ve eaten anything. These are damn addictive and not what I was hoping for, but definitely works really well. Keep in mind these don’t have much structural integrity, so dipping is almost definitely out of the question.

They are so thin they curl a little on the edges. Like me during the dead of winter.

I don’t know exactly what siesta flavour is supposed to be, but I can taste hints of onion, garlic and tomato, as well as some slightly cheesy tanginess. The flavour is very light, and along with the texture, these are very pleasant to eat, and don’t leave any strong, long lasting flavour to it. Snacking on these is very easy, and I could easily finish off an entire bag in one sitting, for better or worse. It’s got a familiar flavour to it, and yet I can’t recall what it reminds me of. I’d qualify this as a safe flavour choice – nothing too strong and nothing that would be offensive to anyone.

I was expecting these to be somewhat bland in flavour, but I they struck a really good balance and these are incredibly addictive. Just light enough to not make you feel sated until you’ve eaten the entire bag, but not so light that you feel completely unsatisfied after each chip. A dangerous combo this one, but one I’ll definitely get again.

No shot you only eat 40 chips in one go.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
