Lay’s – Wavy Hickory BBQ

I’m not a big Lay’s fan, mostly because their classic style of chip is iconic, but not my preference. Like my women, I like my chips hard and crunchy, and I want them to be able to potentially damage my mouth if I’m not careful. The danger is the best part.

I’ve mentioned before that while these might in theory seem to be like Ruffles, they aren’t and in this humble northerners opinion, are inferior. That opinion hinges largely on the texture that I look for if I go after a ridged chip. I want something hearty and substantial, but Lay’s is generally not that, no matter what shape their chips come in. But then again, I haven’t had their BBQ flavour in a long time and I do remember it fondly as a kid, so here we are.

Maybe it’s been too long since I had Lay’s BBQ, but these taste a bit less sweet and have more of a smoky, savoury flavour to it. Perhaps it’s the hickory in the name that distinguishes it, but I remember the original BBQ flavour being more sweet and not quite as smoky. it was more like the Kraft BBQ I grew up, while this is more like an actual BBQ sauce. That isn’t to say it’s bad, it’s just not a flavour I like to opt for as much these days. Maybe I’ve outgrown it.

Smells like a classic hole in wall diner.

The texture lands it squarely somewhere between the generic ridged potato chip and Ruffles. All that means is it’s not bad. My tin foil hat tells me that while Lay’s and Ruffles are owned by the same people, they can’t have Lay’s be too similar to Ruffles and has to give room to the sister brand to grow and flourish. This might be more for someone who likes a fun shape to their chip but doesn’t want to have too much crunch or heft to the chip the same way Ruffles does. There’s a place for both of these on the market, I think. The other thing to note is that Lay’s tends to have more flavours available, while Ruffles tends to focus on a a smaller assortment, but tends to do them quite well.

Something slightly unsettling about how uniform they look.

While I wouldn’t buy a bag of these for myself, if I’m having guests over or having a party of some sort, I would get these again. Not my usual flavour profile that I opt for but these are inoffensive enough that they can appeal to a wide audience and I can see them being quite popular as a snack while playing poker or watching a game.

I wonder what potatoes fit the selection criteria.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
