Pretz – Roasted Salted Butter

I remember as a kid when Pretz only had a few flavours under it’s belt, I decided to deviate from my usual green box that housed the infamous salad flavour. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say. I grabbed the red box which was known only as “roasted”. Having no real idea what that meant, I figured it couldn’t be so bad. In all honesty it wasn’t THAT bad, it’s just that when compared to the salty flavour of the salad, it couldn’t match up. It was the only time I ever had it – to this day I can still remember that flavour – plain, slightly sweet and mostly just kind of like a biscuit or cracker. As someone who was obsessed with the seasoning of the salad flavour that I would lick the fingers clean to get more of that tasty sodium, the roasted flavour was a far cry.

For those unfamiliar with Pretz, you’d be forgiven in thinking this is a pretzel stick. In reality it’s more of a biscuit stick. Pretzels usually have that crunchy, shiny exterior that gives it a signature snap. These are inspired by those, but don’t have the same outer shell and is more straight forward. The benefit of it not having the shiny exterior is that it seems to hold onto seasoning better.

Meanwhile I just tear into it like an animal.

This pack like many others, comes with two individually sealed pouches and this one comes with a fun way to open up the box and make it fun to share. I guess it’s mostly for kids or adults really in touch with their inner child. For me personally, I haven’t the faintest clue what a rakutabe pocket is…and I’m a little scared to search it up.

An oh so familiar smell.

The flavour of this is advertised as roasted salted butter, but truthfully I don’t taste the salted part. The flavour is like a sweetened, buttery biscuit stick. It smells very buttery, and tastes the part. The interesting thing here is I taste a hint of lemon after taste. I wonder if that’s intentional or a result of some other flavours combining to deliver that experience. Truthfully it tastes like a slightly sweeter version of the roasted flavour I had as a kid. If you’re into that, then power to you. It’s not for me though, and I prefer the more savoury flavours when it comes to Pretz. The saltier the better, as I like to think of Pretz.

It smells a lot saltier than it tastes, which is not at all.

I don’t typically opt for sweet flavours when it comes to Pretz, and I prefer the salty, savoury ones. This one isn’t bad by any means, but I mostly went into it expected salted butter to have more of a savoury flavour rather than a sweet. As it stands, I would have thought it was some buttery biscuit treat that had a hint of lemon added for a little bit of zing in the after taste. Gun to my head, I would definitely pick this over the normal roasted flavour, but I wouldn’t take this flavour over any of the other ones if I’m being honest. A bit too plain for me.

Not my preferred way of putting on calories.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
