Riceworks – Sweet Chili

When you observe the snack scene as closely as I often do, you notice certain trends. Sweet chili is one I didn’t particularly pay close attention to when it first started, but it’s definitely become more popular and is in vogue these days. It’s not hard to see why – traditionally distinct flavours can be combined together to deliver new and tasty combinations. Sometimes sweet and salty or sweet and spicy works even better than just one or the other.

While I do fear spice most times, I do welcome the combination of flavours. Spicy on it’s own or for the sake of heat is quite droll for me, so adding in some other flavour notes entices me more. I like to find moderation in all things, spice especially. Spice gets me all sweaty and snotty, so it’s generally not a very fun time for me.

These are a very uniform and pleasant triangle shape, and smell equally pleasant. They smell very sweet and savoury, and thankfully don’t look too angry when it comes to the colour. I assume it means they won’t burn a hole in my stomach.

Doesn’t smell spicy…

As a spice wimp, I greatly appreciate that these have more sweet than chili to it. It’s got a nice sweet, slightly tangy chili flavour to it that is very mild and doesn’t burn at all. It relies more on the flavour itself, rather than the heat to let you know it’s supposed to be chili. It also akin to most standard big brand chip flavours when it comes to sweet chili, so you aren’t being thrown any curve balls here. You get exactly what you would expect. If you were hoping for something with more kick though, not sure I can recommend these for that reason. The flavour overall is quite tasty though, and is worth a try just for that.

They don’t look too threatening.

What I really enjoy about these style of rice chips is the texture. They have a nice, satisfying crunch to them and every so often you get the slight variation in texture when you bite into one of the grains of rice. The chips are also quite thick, and due to the way they are made have a nice density to them, which as I always say, I’m a big fan of.

Dense and yet crispy.

Suffice to say I am a big fan of these, and it’s one of the select snacks I would recommend to anyone who is able to, whether they be restricted by allergies or availability. I guess if I had to be a stickler, the one group I wouldn’t recommend it to is people who prefer really light or airy chips – these are the opposite of that so be warned. For everyone else, go get em!

Calorie wise it’s just as bad as potato chips.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
