Ritter Sport – Waffel

Regional varieties are one way that companies can make us feel special for living or hailing from a specific area or region. Ritter Sport does this to a certain extent, though much less than some other brands I see. One such regional variety is their waffel flavour. I’m not sure what’s stopping them from releasing them closer to my side of the pond, since this seems like it would be a smash hit. Maybe it has and I just haven’t seen it? Either way, I’m excited to try a new flavour.

Similar to the butter biscuit, this bar is basically a waffel trapped inside a chocolate bar. While they call it a waffel, I think of it more as a wafer, like the chocolate filled ones. Except this one has chocolate on the outside as well. And the inside? Waffleception? How has no one else thought of this yet?

Something about the uniformity just draws me in.

I’m not 100% certain, but I feel like the milk chocolate coating is sweeter than the chocolate that’s being used in the wafer. The milk chocolate itself very sweet, and normally that wouldn’t be too much of an issue but when compared to the chocolate used in the wafer, the contrast is obvious. The wafer filling inside reminds me a bit of Nutella.I feel like this would have benefited from a thicker wafer so that the ratio of chocolate to wafer is lower. The wafer they use on the inside is actually top notch, and I would love to get some of them on it’s own without the extra chocolate. The wafer is very crispy and messy to eat, but delightful and works really well with the darker chocolate filling.

Texture is largely carried by the wafer inside – it’s very light, airy and has just the right ratio of chocolate filling. Unfortunately the milk chocolate on the outside is again a bit too thick in comparison, and would benefit form a lower coating to wafer ratio. I’m guessing it’s a cost thing though, so I get it. I just think it would be way better if the ratio was more towards the wafer, which is really quite nice and would be wonderful as a standalone snack.

Layer upon layer.

Let me first preface this by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. From the chocolate coating itself to the wafer in the centre, this has all the right ingredients for something great. The problem is that I don’t see any reason to get this over another Ritter Sport flavour that is more unique and enticing. While this one is good, I feel like the outer coating is too thick and the wafer inside is too small in proportion. A bigger wafer would definitely make this a more attractive option if I want some chocolate and some wafer, but as it stands I feel like I’d rather opt for a wafer cookie instead. Bit of a shame since the wafer they use inside is actually quite solid and I’d love to see more of it shine through.

Maybe don’t finish this in one sitting.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
