Snappers – Dipped Dark Chocolate Sea Salt

I recall having Turtles as a kid, which is what these are vaguely trying to emulate. While I can remember quite well what Turtles were like, I can’t really remember if it was a positive or negative reception. Based on that I’m going to assume it was a resoundingly lukewarm feeling. I liked any chocolate or sweets I could get my hands on as a kid, but these weren’t too much to my liking for whatever reason. Maybe it was the nuts, or the caramel, or the fact that it was both. Either way, the nostalgia train doesn’t carry them far.

That being said, these are quite an interesting take on the formula, and rather than have nuts it has pretzels. It seems so simple in concept, and yet the product really is greater than the sum of it’s parts. I don’t put too much stock in brands that advertise things like healthy or organic, non-GMO or what have you. I mostly just care how something tastes. I will give credit where it’s due though, and that’s that the ingredient list isn’t super long or filled with anything fancy or crazy sounding. It really just does strike me as chocolate, caramel and pretzels.

They look oddly familiar…

The combination seems simple, and yet the execution is surprisingly good. The dark chocolate coating is not too thick, but thick enough to hold everything together without melting in your hands, and the caramel on the inside isn’t too thick or runny, and has just the right amount of chewiness to it. The pretzels are fairly soft and give a nice crumble and crisp to add in some more textures to keep things from getting bland or boring. The sea salt doesn’t add much in terms of texture but it does help add to the overall flavour experience.

…almost like I’ve seen them somewhere…

The flavour of the dark chocolate itself is nothing too special or remarkable, but it’s dark chocolate and it gets the job done. By that I mean it does a really good job balancing out the caramel sweetness. I have to give credit to the pretzels and sea salt, as they serve to provide an added dimension of flavour that really helps to add to the experience while also balancing it out so it’s not just sweet. You’ve got a wonderful balance of sweet, salty and slightly bitter all in one package.

…but they aren’t all that similar to what I’ve had in the past.

These are good, and I will definitely be getting them again. While they are a bit on the pricier side when compared to other similar products like Turtles, I do find these to be superior and at least the dark chocolate flavour I had was something I couldn’t stop myself from eating.

Honestly worth the calories.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
