The Natural Confectionery Co. – Sour Squirms
Usually when I think of sour worms, I think of really soft, gummy worms. They sort of flop around and don’t hold together very well. These seem to have a lot more rigidity to them, and don’t have the distinct snake-like characteristic of most gummy worms. These remind me more of some sort of jelly straws. They are more like a sturdy fruit snack in a shape of a worm, that somehow manages to maintain structural integrity. It’s impressive but also not as fun to play with.
There’s a total of three different flavour varieties, with each one having two flavours on each side. Interestingly enough though, there’s only a total of five flavours. There’s lime, orange, raspberry, banana and blackcurrant. I will say that I’m used to associating yellow with lemon, so it’s a bit of an adjustment for me. It’s also a little strange to me that they chose banana as the duplicate flavour, but I guess it’s popular over there in Australia?
The flavours are clearly identifiable by the colours, and each piece has the two flavours clearly separated. The banana, which is the most common flavour by being on two of the three pieces, is sort of mild sweet banana. It’s not overly artificial and at no point did it remind me of cough medication, so I’m sure that’s a plus for many. The orange is sort of like a Sunny D in that it’s got the orange flavour, but it’s not all that tart or sour, and doesn’t have much of a peel flavour to it.
The raspberry is got a nice berry flavour to it with it’s sweet, slightly floral notes, and actually works alright with the banana.
The lime is very distinct and easily recognizable, and this one has the zesty peel flavour to it. It contrast against the very distinct blackcurrant which has that notable tart flavour that it usually has, and yet again ends up my favourite. Just in lieu of the blackcurrant, this piece is my favourite.
The texture is not quite like a soft gummy, and is more like a firm, thick jelly. The texture is actually quite similar to their other candies. It’s got a fruit snack sort of texture to it where it’s somewhat firm at first, but a little sticky as you start to chew it. Again, very similar to a fruit snack, and similar to the other candies by this same brand.
Overall I found this to be enjoyable, but that’s largely because it’s essentially the same formula as their other candies with the same flavours. Maybe it’s nostalgia but I find myself just enjoying the overall experience quite a bit. I would do these again for sure.
