Tirol Chocolate – Sweet Potato Brulee

I’ve gone on record expressing general disdain for sweet potato flavoured chocolates, and yet I still find myself coming back every so often. I guess curiosity really did kill the cat, huh? I guess a small part of me is hoping to be converted or proven wrong, so I keep crashing the cart into the brick wall.

I don’t believe this is a new flavour, but perhaps just a rebrand of an old flavour and bringing it back as a seasonal variety. I guess after a certain number of years you run out of ideas and have to recycle them. Plus, there’s only so many things you can do with sweet potato. This makes me wonder if I actually like sweet potato, would I be stockpiling these?

Shrinkflation strikes it down to 6 pieces.

This one has a few things going for it to get that sweet potato brulee texture – there’s a starch filling inside that is paired with a burnt sugar syrup, and bits of candy pieces are thrown in to emulate the top of creme brulee. The overall execution is actually pretty solid, and I find myself enjoying it despite my initial misgivings. Truth be told if the sweet potato was switched with something like sea salt or caramel I might be gushing over this.

Looking pretty normal so far.

The flavour is mostly unchanged from the other sweet potato flavours, but the additional caramel pieces, the syrup and the overall texture also trick my brain into thinking this is less play doh like and more like an actual sweet potato. The flavour is honestly not bad. That being said I fully understand that the reason the flavour is serviceable is because the caramel portion helps to cover up the sweet potato. But maybe that’s all you really need, and sometimes that gateway is all it takes.

An interesting texture inside.

Is this the sweet potato flavour that converts me over to a lover? No. Is it better than some of the other ones I’ve had so far? Absolutely. I think the brulee helps, but for the time being I am still hesitant to claim I enjoy sweet potato as a flavour. I might not spend money on this again, but if offered to me I would likely not say no. This will make me more likely to try more sweet potato flavours in the future, rather than be more hesitant. So that’s a win I guess.

The calories though.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
