POM – Orange Juice Gummies

POM is a fairly prominent brand of pomegranate juice in my neck of the hemisphere. In Japan and Asia at large though, it’s a fairly popular and longstanding brand of orange juice drink. I say drink because I hesitate to confirm whether it’s actually juice. Think something along the lines of Sunny D. I have had POM treats before and enjoyed them quite a bit, but again, it tasted more like a sweet confectionery in drink form than a juice. Tasty but dangerous.

These gummies are interesting because they aren’t just a straight forward gummy. Instead, there is a gummy layer and a jelly layer within. It’s hard to tell in the pictures but the outer layer has a light orange colour to it, while the jelly within is a slightly darker shade of orange. They also smell very sweet and orangey, also like Sunny D. While they do smell very tasty, I generally have reservations on gummies that try to get cute and add in things into the middle. Structural integrity makes all the difference in texture, and I don’t know that this will help things.

The texture is very detailed, similar to an actual orange slice.

The flavour of the outer gummy layer is fairly mild and borderline bland. The jelly is where most of the flavour is, and it has a nice rich orange juice flavour going for it. It’s not too sweet, and not too tart. It also has an almost pulpy flavour to it, if that makes sense. Sort of like when you drink a glass of orange juice and get those slightly bitter bits of pulp in your teeth.

They’re basically screaming, “bite me”.

The texture of the gummy layer is fairly soft, and has realistically just one bounce to it’s bite before it gives. The jelly on the inside is a thick syrup like texture so it’s not flowy, but its soft enough that it’s mostly there for flavour than texture. It might be the flavour giving the illusion of texture, but for some reason I think of pulp when I get to the jelly layer. Like I said, structural integrity. It’s a cute gimmick, but there’s a reason it falls apart in practice. It’s just science people!

These are interesting for sure, but nothing revolutionary and I suspect outside of people who have tried POM candies and drinks, these may not seem very interesting to people. I wouldn’t go out of my way for these, and likely wouldn’t even get them unless they were on sale. A novelty at best.

At least the calories aren’t too bad.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
