Sour Patch Kids – Snapple Fruit Flavour Mix
I loved Snapple growing up, from their fancy bottles to the little tidbits and facts they had under each bottle cap. So much so that I found an ancient bottle cap from an old bottle of Snapple when I was clearing out some old boxes. Even now I can remember the distinct pop sound the caps made when you opened it for the first time. I also remember really enjoying all the novel flavours they had at the time. You have to remember that when they came onto the scene, the concept of ice tea was still somewhat new and even newer was flavoured ice teas like peach or raspberry.
Snapple has never truly gone away, but it certainly feels much more corporate and less whimsical like when it first hit the scenes. While unfortunate, I guess it’s still nice to see they are around and kicking, and partnering up with Sour Patch Kids, apparently. While I’m not expecting anything to rekindle the nostalgia for OG Snapple, the flavours do seem interesting and novel at the very least.

Fruit punch tastes exactly how I remember it tasting as a kid – it’s some combination of grape, apple, pear and orange juice. It’s delightfully nostalgic and I can’t get enough of it. Kiwi strawberry is sort of mildly strawberry, and one other flavour, but it doesn’t read as kiwi. It’s sort of like a kiwi strawberry infused water, where the kiwi is so weak you might as well assume it’s not there. It does sort of remind me of the Snapple drink though, so I guess it sort of works. The mango madness on the other hand is very vibrant, very strong and punches my taste buds in the face. It is very clearly tropical type flavour with very strong notes of what claims to be mango, but registers more as a combination of orange and pineapple.

The texture of these is similar to most candies by Maynard’s like Fuzzy Peaches, Cherry Blasters and Swedish Fish. They are somewhat chewy, but also very sticky and as you bite into them they melt and sort of get everywhere between your teeth and any gaps you may have. The nostalgia is probably the part of my brain that kind of misses and enjoys that, while the logical part of my brain tells me this is a bit of a nightmare and I don’t particularly enjoy it. But I guess it’s part of the experience so here we are. Would I prefer something less sticky? Yes. Will I stop consuming these because of how sticky they are? No.
