Hi-Chew – Sour Cherry
I’m not sure if it’s just a really big thing in North America to make things sour, or it’s just not as common in Japan. But when I see these types of flavours I tend to notice that the Hi-Chews sold in the western markets go for the sour far more, and earlier than when the Hi-Chews in Asia do. Or maybe it’s just a Hi-Chew thing. Either way this flavour definitely made me think of the western side of Hi-Chews.
It feels like the outer layer is sweet and the inner is sour. Similar to the other sour flavours that Hi-Chew has done, this is a good balance between sweet and sour that doesn’t lean too heavily into one or the other, and has a nice comprise between the two as you switch between each bite. The overall experience when taken altogether is an overall pleasing one, and I can see why Hi-Chew keeps leaning into the sour line. It’s pretty easy to execute on and there are some sleeper hits waiting to happen, like this one.

Something strange about this that I noticed is that it has a slightly creamier texture than usual, which is hard to explain but it finishes more like a taffy than the usual Hi-Chew I get. Thinking out loud now, I am guessing it’s just a side effect of the hot weather that this candy has been through. Other than that it’s the typical Hi-Chew experience with the nice bouncy texture that manages to give a nice chew and clean finish without getting all sticky. As I get older I come to appreciate more and more, the value of a chewy candy that won’t stick to any surface it comes into contact with. Especially with those teeth gaps widening as I get up there in years.
The beauty of a consistent product like Hi-Chew is it takes the guesswork out of the texture so I can focus on the flavour. Cherry flavours are hit or miss for a lot of people, but I think this one is a winner and strikes a good balance on feeling too artificial, or too unlike an actual cherry. It’s also not overly sour or overly sweet, and hits that Goldilocks zone for flavour in more than one way. An easy win in my books, and I would get this again.
