Percy Pig – Phizzy Pigtails
I went down the Percy Pig rabbit hole a few years back, and to my shock and horror, it was the same as Fred Ferkel. I started my Katjes journey with Fred, so to find out that he was the same as the very well established Percy Pig in the UK, it rocked my world. It felt like this cheerful gummy pig I thought I knew was someone else entirely, and I felt like I didn’t truly know him. Suffice to say this was a large contributing factor to my mid-life crisis.
Jokes aside, my experience with Katjes pig gummies was largely just the OG Fred and the party pigs. It wasn’t until I went back to visit Hong Kong that I chanced upon a Marks & Spencer. For those unaware, M&S is a storied retailer with a long history and has been a staple retailer in the UK for what feels like forever. They had a little storefront in one of the many mega malls in Hong Kong, and that’s where I saw the large selection of Percy Pig product.

I don’t have enough experience with Percy from the UK, but I am guessing this flavour is based on their fizzy drink, which is a combination of grape and apple. The flavour tastes like a cross between grape and what I suspect is apple. The top and bottom parts of the gummy appear to be two different flavours. There also seems to be hints of blackcurrant and elderberry. It’s sort of hard to tell the flavours since they are actually quite sour and tart. These aren’t just lightly sour, these are sour enough that I find myself slightly puckering up. The flavours overall are to what you find on a Percy, but obviously much more sour. The sweet is there hidden under all the sour, but for the most part these are relatively sour the entire way through.
The texture is sort of the reverse of a typical Percy Pig – it’s dominated by the firm gummy piece on top and has the softer foamy part on the bottom. This makes these pieces a lot sticker then the classic pigs, and also firmer. The are very similar in texture to those sour keys. Also because of the curly nature of these, it does make for a bit of a tongue workout if you are like me and subconscious try to unravel it with your tongue. Again, these are sticky so I prefer to bite into the tail one section at a time instead of multiple at a time, but you do you.

All in all, I enjoyed these just as much as any other Percy Pig product. I can see why he’s so popular. Plus it’s vegan to boot, so there’s another plus for those with dietary restrictions. Would I get this again? For sure. Would I be able to get these without costing an arm and a leg in shipping? Probably not.
